Abstract

Abstract - Microwaves, in general, cover a wide range of electromagnetic wave spectrum covering the wavelengths from a few centimeters to the millimeter and sub-millimeter ranges. Their conventional applications in various types of communication systems, radar, electronic warfare, charged particle accelerators, and thermonuclear fusion reactors are well established. Researchers are now finding newer applications of microwaves in the area of rocket technology, biomedical sciences, waste management, electronic warfare, and metallurgy. The terahertz end of the spectrum is finding potential applications that include monitoring pharmaceutical products, the remote sensing of chemical signatures of explosives in unopened envelopes, and the non-invasive detection of cancers in the human body. Communication, active denial, atmospheric sensing, near object analysis; require RF sources producing several watts to several kilowatts of power in microwave , millimeter, and sub millimeter frequency ranges. The paper covers some of these newer unconventional applications.
