Abstract

Compact vacuum electronic devices are being investigated for efficient high power generation and amplification of terahertz frequencies from 0.1 THz to I THz, as these waves have enormous applications, almost in all sectors. Development activities addressed to 0.22THz frequency band is of significant importance for ultra wide band wireless communication because of the available atmospheric spectral window over wideband from 0.20THz to 0.30THz. Among various vacuum devices, TWT is preferred as a high power amplifier due to its wide bandwidth and high linearity. For high data rate wireless communication, 0.22-THz TWT of 1OOW output power, 20dB gain, I 0% electronic efficiency, and 30GHz bandwidth is being investigated. Analytical approach is developed for designing of a planar double vane loaded rectangular waveguide slow-wave structure for a 0.22 THz I OOW TWT. Planar structure is used because it is compatible for sheet beam operation, and it is also easy to fabricate for THz operation. Planar TWT is designed for a sheet beam of beam voltage 20 kV and beam current 50 mA. Effect of various parameters of a double-vane SWS on dispersion and impedance characteristics are evaluated for achieving a planar TWT of bandwidth more than 40 GHz with high gain and high efficiency. In-house developed SUNRAY 1-0 and 2.50 large signal analysis codes are used to determine RF performance of the planar TWT.
