Abstract
Plasma cathodes have several beneficial qualities such as high current, broad or focused beams both in pulsed and steady-state modes of operation and absence of a thermionic cathode etc. The applications of this type of electron gun include electron beam melting and welding, surface treatment, plasma chemistry, radiation technologies, laser pumping, microwave generation, and more. Activity on technology development of plasma cathode electron gun has started at CSIR - CEERI Pilani in 2007. The developed plasma electron gun is based on the pseudo spark (PS) discharges. The efforts on design and development of above plasma electron gun will be discussed in the presentation. This will include brief discussion on relevant physical phenomena in the PS discharges and on techniques involved in the development of hollow cathode structure, high voltage sections, etc. Analysis of the electron beam profile for different operating conditions at several axial and radial locations inside the drift space in argon atmosphere will be presented.
